U.S. Car Makers Navigating Gas-Price Surges Better

Wall Street Journal -- A move toward more fuel-efficient vehicles has helped American car manufacturers navigate the latest surge in fuel prices with relative strength.

Researchers at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, in a new report, consider three recent periods of surging gasoline prices occurring in the summer of 2008, the spring of 2011, and from February until April of this year.

The three periods were defined by a sharp rise in gasoline prices, with varying effects on the sale of automobiles in the U.S. The paper’s authors caution a clear reading on Detroit’s performance is hard to come by because the 2011 period spanned the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, which compromised that nation’s auto-production levels for a time.

They have always been first in producing gas guzzlers and by the way the most profitable vehicles and are forced to make improvements as they kick, scream and go to the feds for every nickel they can get their hands on.

So far I have only found one nearing all those qualities and it's foreign.

If you look at the chart of Average US Gas prices for the last 8 years, you'll see that gas prices have run up every spring to go down by a smaller amount every fall. The exception to that was the economic collapse during the late Bush second term when prices went from $2.90 in Jan 20008 to $4.12 in July to $1.61 before climbing back up to $2.61 the following June.

If he gets reelected and it hits before the Nov 14 elections, he gets a veto proof Congress, who will proceed to undo everything he had done in the previous 6 years - so no he doesn't want $10/gal gas.
