Study reports 'hidden costs' in gas drilling

post-gazette.com -- A PennEnvironment Re-search & Policy Center report has identified more than a dozen categories of hidden costs -- including aquifer contamination, human health problems and damage to roadways, home values and natural resources -- linked to Marcellus Shale gas development in Pennsylvania.

The report, released Thursday in Pittsburgh as Gov. Tom Corbett was welcoming the industry at the Marcellus Shale Coalition's second annual conference in Philadelphia, also stated that bonding amounts required by the state will be inadequate to cover long-term future costs of plugging abandoned wells.

"There are a staggering array of threats to the environment posed by Marcellus Shale gas development and myriad costs," said Erika Staaf of PennEnvironment, a statewide advocacy organization. "We're a

Ah, yes. Those darn hidden costs to human health and the environment. As long as someone else gets stuck with these costs, corporations are fine with that.

.
Fracking is not new, it is over 60 years old. Three FULL EPA REPORTS have not found one single intense of water pollution. In fact, water and oil don't mix which is why they stay separated underground for THOUSANDS of years! In 60 years there has not been one a single aquifer contamination by Fracking!

I know this from personal experience because my grandparents property in Western PA has both oil and gas wells on it and Fracking has been used and the well water (not city water) tastes as great as it always has!

This is from an environmental groups findings/literature so the truth is likely somewhere in-between the views....though there are issues & any extra business on large scales taxes the infrastructure of an area. Thing with oil/gas they often pay for upgrades & area benefits both economically & from a infrastructure basis.

PennEnvironment is a 501(c)(3) organization with an anti-fracking agenda. Teafortwo seems to gravitate towards the anti fracking agenda.

It is a good thing that someone is watching the store, so to speak. Left to their own devices the oil and gas drillers would do nothing to protect the public or employees beyond what minimal requirements were in place before the boom.

Why do some of you have to bring in the political attacks?! Look, Fracking is not what it is being sold as! There are some serious issues and health concerns related to drinking water. It seems that some of you out in GB land would rather have gas for their car instead of clean water to drink!! Wake the F up people!! You only live THREE DAYS without water!!

We're all hung up on the importance of energy, but for those of you who will be around in 50 years, the lack of clean water (maybe enough water of any sort) will dwarf the concerns we have today about energy.

"Garbage in Garbage out" We all know this statment, it applies to fracking also. If they put grabage into the ground, they will get oil, gas and grabage out.

As far as "hidden costs" are concerned all levels of regulatory control should be aware of them or else the people doing the regulating are doing a bad job. This applies to any regulated business concern.

This study shows how much to charge the industry to clean up. This cost will be passed on to the customer.
