Railroads Are on a Fast Track, Thanks to Bakken Oil

CNBC -- Among the biggest beneficiaries of the demand for transport of crude oil out of North Dakota’s Bakken shale region are the owners of the two main rail links to the region, Canadian Pacific Railway and Burlington Northern Santa Fe, which is owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway.

The companies are exploiting the lack of pipeline capacity needed to ship the region’s rapidly growing production of crude to refineries thousands of miles away, and that demand is serving to more than offset expected weakness from their shipment of agricultural products due to the drought and lower coal shipments as utilities shift to burning the cheaper natural gas.Oil production from the 200,000-square-mile Bakken basin, which extends into Montana and southern Canada, is skyrocketing, thanks in part ..

It doesn't matter - Refineries can't handle what they have now.

People worry about pipeline leaks. Just think, a rolling disaster possibly coming to your neighbourhood if they have an accident or terrorist attack.

Come January you will have the Koch brothers cronies lapping up the profits. I don't see a big difference.

Depends on what you are transporting. It is kind of difficult to transport bulk crude oil on a plane, don't you think? And with the idiocies of TSA more and more people are going by train for short to medium distances. Just see how full the trains on eht East Coast are.

Trains are an underutilized form of transportation in America. We should be encouraging the use of the rails for passengers and freight.

Railroads could be used more. As the cost of fuel goes up, trains can pull a lot more weight than trucks per gallon.

I also enjoyed the play on words "Fast Track". We need to find other ways to make the same protest Bakken is makin'! I am getting sick and tired of paying for foreign oil when we have loads and loads of oil right here in North America. Obama and the left be damned! Those who are standing in the way of processing, piping and using our own petroleum products should be shot (or at least voted out of office!!!!
