Aberdeen goes solar, aims to soak in savings

Asbury Park Press -- A $2.9 million solar project, which is expected to cut the township government’s annual electric bill by half, will be completed by the end of September.

The township is financing the project, which has placed solar arrays on township buildings through a 15-year, power-purchase agreement.

The township is joining a growing number of homes, businesses and government agencies that are turning to the sun for power. According to the state Clean Energy Program, 17,132 homes and businesses have installed a solar energy program as of July 31, which generated a total of more than 852 megawatts of energy since 2001.

Over the next 15 years, Aberdeen should achieve a savings of approximately $750,000 or more, Harris said.

What's really amazing is that 9 in 10 read the article, comprehended what they read and went on. Unfortunately, you are not in that category.

Here is what it reads:

"Under the power purchase agreement, Nexus finances, constructs, maintains and owns the solar energy system. It then sells the electricity at a reduced cost to the township government.
“There are no upfront costs. We get all the benefits without the expenses,” said township Manager Holly Reycraft."

Sooo, there is NO installation cost and NO maintenance cost for the township. The listed saving is just that, SAVING. Try to read and comprehend next time, please.

Let that be an incentive for more towns to go solar.

PithyOpiner - in penciling it out, did you check out the solar companies that wii do the same as Nexus is doing for this NJ township? I've seen a lot of solar companies in California that will do the install, maintenance and all for no upfront cost to you. They own it all, and you get the reduced electric bill. They take the risk, and you share in the reward.

ghmortensen, 96sc1, and all the rest below who prove they didn't bother to read the article or just can't comprehend, read the following from the article;

>>Benefits without expenses

Under the power purchase agreement, Nexus finances, constructs, maintains and owns the solar energy system. It then sells the electricity at a reduced cost to the township government.

“There are no upfront costs. We get all the benefits without the expenses,” said township Manager Holly Reycraft.<<

So the township is "financing" a project (i.e. charging taxpayers) which costs $2.9 million to save $750,000 over the next 15 years. If I were a taxpayer, I would be very angry.

I would do it on my home if it only would pencil out to be a savings in the near term. But, all my calculations indicate it is not much of a cost effective endeavor right now.

They should also look at Dow Solar Shingles for some of their buildings to help augment the solar panels.
