Slowly, U.S. reduces reliance on Middle Eastern oil

GasBuddy Blog -- In election years there's always lots of rhetoric to consume and some of it may give you indigestion, but this much is clear: energy independence is an achievable goal and it is indeed a political issue too.

The question is, has the reduced oil consumption helped the US (and North America as a whole) to stop, rethink and find new ways in the energy sector so that, when the economy gets better again, there will be more effective means?

If the price remains high we'll keep the demand down.

I really don't think either's approach will help the price of oil/gas. And no matter what, when the global price of oil goes up the price of domestic oil will also go up.

OLD - the usual stuff by PD.

It isn't more drilling for oil that will lead to energy independence, it's more about what we do with the oil once it is taken out of the ground. The refineries in the NE US don't have access to oil found in North America. All they can get is the imported Brent, which costs about 45 cents a gallon more. That's why I would agree with constructing the Keystone XL pipeline only if it went to the NE US refineries instead of Texas ports.

We need to become oil independent. But, with gas prices at record highs, someone really needs to address this immediately!

We would do a lot better if the republicans in control of congress could
be forced out. To much bribe money being placed in their pockets by their Arab owners to break away free. Obama will do a little better the next 4 years. The Bush tragedy set us back for years. Obama in 2012.
