I have never done any serious train travel outside of the USA. I have, however, been across the country 15 times so far, including trips on Santa Fe when it had passenger service. (The hi-level cars that were the El Capitan are still in service as the first generation of Amtrak Superliners.). The only long distance trains I have not been on are the Sunset Limited, hard trying to work around service only 3 days a week, and the City of New Orleans, by choice. And if you ask, the Empire Builder is best for scenery, and the Coast Starlight is the best for service.
