Hi Sneakers55. There are already laws and regulations to ensure safety and prevent harm such as your antifreeze reference. The context of my statement applied to our gov't pushing for the auto industry to come up with a car that gets 54mpg by the year 2025. So if by 2025 the cars at best get 53mpg, then there are to be some negative consequences? How does a car getting 53mpg (under the goal) compare with something like safety regulations? A competitive manufacturer will strive to improve their product on their own or lose business to their competitors -without our gov't sticking its nose where it doesn't belong. Our gov't has enough actually more than they seem able to handle with bigger problems such as the deficit, spending, border control, learning the Constitution. Imagine if the EPA told you to cut your electric use by 75%. Wouldn't that be in your best interest anyway if you could do it without needing the EPA to barge into your private home? I think I would rather have the FDA and the USDA making sure my food and drugs are safe. We know what happened when we let private industry do their own thing: they made a liquid medicine containing antifreeze.
