The purpose was to keep the ball away from Brees as much as possible. Alex Smith snapped the ball with 5 seconds or less left on the play clock whenever the clock was running. I don't understand why all QBs don't do that when they are ahead and would want to run clock. I even see some veteran QBs snapping the ball early, for no nreason.

I agree to a point. Big Ben almost ALWAYS snaps the ball with 1 or 2 seconds left on the play clock. To me, that gives the defense an easy jump on the play, knowing when the ball is going to be snapped. Smith played the best game of his career. His pass to Davis will link him to Montana-Clark and Young-Owens for playoff game winning TD passes.
