A few weeks ago we identified the U.S. cities conducting the most aggregious robbery of motorists via 'speed traps'... and here's the flip side of that story, which we're glad to share.

One of the reasons speed traps succeed is because too often local residents watch quietly as the revenue rolls in and their local elected muckety mucks are reluctant to upset any revenue streams they can operate with impunity. Both know deep down that such practices are predatory and they're wrong.

But now, believe it or not, in northeast Ohio there's an elected official who's trying to shut down a notorious speed trap in Linndale. He's the son of a Cleveland police officer and the father of a police officer too. State Senator Tom Patton...

Locals need to take action...grass roots style and make sure their city officials know how they feel about speed traps and how they expect their tax dollars to be used. If you want to hire police to write speeding tickets, then thats what you get. If you want them patrolling your neighborhoods day and night guarding agains crime then thats what you need to do. But it takes actual constructive criticism and not blogs and gripes to get it done.

Linndale is the smallest village in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It is landlocked, surrounded by the cities of Cleveland and Brooklyn. According to the 2010 census, the village achieved the second highest growth rate in Cuyahoga County: 53% as the population increased from 117 to 179, although the last house was built in 1968 and there are only 37 residential addresses.[4]

Linndale is site of the busiest, on a per-capita basis, Mayor's Court in the State of Ohio.[5] The village has successfully defended its legal right to enforce the 60 mph speed limit on the 422 yards of Interstate 71 within its jurisdiction under the "Home Rule" provisions of the state constitution.[6][7] The combination of traffic enforcement and Mayor's Court provides 80% of Linndale's one million dollar annual budget, and underwrites its four full-time and ten part-time police officers.[8]

The thing with this situation is, the "town" in question is so small that its unclear if the town limits even stretch to the nearest exit ramp. The entrance ramp would certainly be outside of their jurisdiction. they are way to small to have a fire dept or a school of any sort and they are in the "middle" of Cleveland. they shouldn't be a town at all, they should be taken in by a surrounding city and all the town officials fired and maybe prosecuted.

Yeah, but this Linndale trap has existed for decades, through both robust economic times and downturns. It's just plain old money grubbing by Linndale.

Small towns need to keep a tighter rein on their cops. Police departments tend to want to buy more gadgets than they know how to run. The back room is often piled high with yesterdays stuff--stuff that is often used to turn enough revenue to buy more useless stuff with which to molest and bother the motoring public who may well be having their house broken into even as the ticket is written. If we look at our bottom line, just how much money does the dept bring in for anyone but themselves and their future growth?

"Sullivan, Indiana is an example of this. It sits on U.S. 41, a four-lane divided highway, and it has several streets that cross the highway. They've had numerous bad accidents over the years, some with fatalities.'

But Linndale doesn't have a single entrance or exit connecting to the highway. Huge difference. As I said Linndale police have to leave Linndale to even get to the highway!
If this were occasional speed monitoring, nobody would have a problem, but 24/7 pretty much shows the only reason Linndale even has a police force is to issue speeding tickets to cars that don't pass through any of the towns streets.

This legislation is long over due. The state highway patrol is responsible for monitoring the interstates, not Linndale police. Just because the highway cuts across a corner of that little burg (which technically has no interstate access to I-71)should not have jurisdiction to ticket freeway motorists because of geography.

There are pros and cons with these issues. Of course safety is important but if a locality deliberately sets up a speed trap soley for producing revenue, then this is not right.

It's fine until you're the one getting grifted. I can't imagine that locals were not caught in that speed trap at some point. I'm all for safety but as the article points out this has nothing to do with safety.

I wish him luck, there is no other way to describe Linndale other than a speed trap. The cops have to drive through the surrounding cities just to get to their little patch on I-71.

we need more of that. Most people don't have a problem if they are trully set up for safety. The problem is with all these cash strapped jurisdictions, the need the money and speed traps are easy money

TELL THE SPEED TRAP TOWN THAT THEY MUST HAVE THEIR OWN FIRE DEPARTMENT AND THE THEIR OWN SCHOOLS. IF THAT FAILS, LOAD UP THE JAIL BY NOT PAYING THE FINE, THREE HOTS AND A COT WILL COST THEM MORE TIME AND MONEY THEN IT WOULD BE WORTH. MORE THAN THE $800,000 THEY COLLECT NOW. THEY WOULD HAVE TO HIRE MORE COPS AND BUILD A BIGGER JAIL, SCHOOLS AND A FIRE HOUSE AND FIRE TRUCKS AND EQUIPMENT. ALSO MAKE THEM PROVE THE ALL 179 RESIDENTS OF LEGAL RESIDENTS.
